Winter home maintenance checklist

Winter is mostly about keeping things running and catching small problems before they become urgent. Indoor work, comfort and safety matter most when the weather is at its worst.

High priority

Don't put these off — winter punishes delays.

Heating & hot water

  • Bleed radiators when any feel cold at the top
  • Keep boiler pressure between 1.2 and 1.5 bar cold
  • Note the boiler service number in case of breakdown
  • On very cold nights, leave the heating on low rather than offPrevents pipe freezes.

Pipes & water

  • Insulate any exposed pipes in the loft, garage and outhouses
  • Locate and label the main stopcockEveryone in the house should know where it is.
  • Drain and isolate outside taps if not already done

Damp, condensation & mould

  • Wipe condensation from window sills daily where it forms
  • Run extractor fans during and after showers and cooking
  • Move furniture a few centimetres away from cold external walls
  • Check loft ventilation isn't blocked by stored items

Safety

  • Test smoke and CO alarms
  • Keep paths and steps gritted in icy weather
  • Check outside lights and replace any failed bulbsDark mornings and evenings — visibility matters.
  • Service or sweep wood burners and open fireplaces
Medium priority

Comfort, efficiency and small repairs.

Draughts & efficiency

  • Add draught seals to internal doors of unheated rooms
  • Fit thermal curtains or check existing ones close fully
  • Use door snakes on cold doors
  • Adjust TRVs to match how each room is actually used

Interior repairs

  • Touch up paint where it's been knocked over Christmas
  • Fix doors that have swelled and stick
  • Re-fix loose handles, towel rails and shelves
  • Check the loft hatch closes tightly

Kitchen & laundry

  • Clean tumble dryer lint trap and vent ductFire safety and efficiency.
  • Wipe washing machine seal with white vinegar
  • Descale kettle and coffee machine

Outdoor essentials

  • Keep gutters clear of any remaining autumn debris
  • Check fence panels and gates after high winds
  • Cover or store any remaining garden furniture
Low priority

Indoor jobs that fit short, dark days.

Comfort & ambience

  • Add warm lamps and softer lighting to evening rooms
  • Wash throws and blankets between heavy use
  • Refresh hallway storage for wet coats and boots

Order & paperwork

  • Sort one drawer or cupboard per week
  • Update household contacts and renewal reminders
  • Back up phone photos before the new year

Plan ahead

  • Note any jobs to book in springA short list now saves panic later.
  • Check the toolbox and replenish basics
  • Review home insurance documents
